Welcome to Joomla London User Group's monthly meetup

September's JUGL meetup takes on the extension you have not touched in years. Hannes Papenberg — a Joomla core contributor and a familiar face here — shows how to get an old extension onto Joomla 6 code and structure automatically, in about thirty minutes.

Hannes Papenberg — From Joomla 3+ to Joomla 6 code in 30 minutes

Most of us have an extension still running on Joomla 3 code, left alone because the rewrite looks too big to start. Hannes goes through the motions of updating one automatically — code and structure, from Joomla 3 or any version since, in a matter of thirty minutes per extension. The tool behind it is jrector (github.com/joomla-projects/jrector): Joomla rule sets for Rector, the PHP refactoring engine, installed as a Composer package and run over your extension from the command line. He'll also cover setting up a development environment you can keep using afterwards. No more excuses for old code.

Open discussion — what's on your mind?

The second half is open. Bring whatever you want to talk about — we'll put a few up to start if nobody else does: modern site building with or without page builders, security in an AI hacking world, MCPs and whether they're worth the trouble, and using AI for development. No slides required.

Schedule — starts 18:00 UTC (19:00 BST) 15th Sep, runs until 20:00 UTC (21:00 BST):
18:00 — Introductions, chit-chat, and news
18:15 — Hannes Papenberg: From Joomla 3+ to Joomla 6 code in 30 minutes
19:00 — Questions
19:15 — Open discussion — what's on your mind?
19:45 — Fireside chat, news, social, and wrap-up

Description

July's mid-year JUGL meetup event:

Join us for this month's Joomla User Group London (#JUGL) meetup!

For July, we have two sessions from this year's Google Summer of Code students, presenting their contributions to the Joomla project

Reda Mohamed - One Article, Many Categories
Joomla articles are traditionally limited to just one category. Reda's Google Summer of Code project adds secondary categories, so a single article can be associated with multiple categories to better organise site content — appearing in each category's blogs, lists and search results, with article counts, filtering and custom fields all following along.

Weno Ndum Billy Hans - Workflows That Move Themselves
Editors move each article through Joomla's workflow by hand. Weno's Google Summer of Code project lets rules do it instead — articles advancing on their own, with a nudge when something needs a human. A workflow that runs itself.
